About the Arabic Script

Arabic is spoken by more than 400 million people and is the official language of over 20 countries across the Middle East and North Africa. The same script — with small additions — is also used to write Urdu and Persian (Farsi), which is why this site offers typing tools for all three languages.

Some key features of the Arabic script worth knowing:

  • It is written from right to left, unlike English — our typing box switches direction automatically.
  • The alphabet has 28 letters, and most letters change shape depending on whether they appear at the beginning, middle or end of a word.
  • Short vowels are usually written as optional diacritics (حَرَكَات), so the same letters can often be read in more than one way — context decides.
  • Urdu extends the script with extra letters (ٹ ڈ ڑ ے) and is normally written in the flowing Nastaliq style, while Persian adds پ چ ژ گ.
  • Numbers can be written with either Western digits (1 2 3) or Eastern Arabic numerals (١ ٢ ٣).

With phonetic typing you do not need to memorise any of this to get started — type the sounds in English letters, pick the right suggestion, and the tool produces proper Arabic script instantly.
